"It's not a good thing if it is cheap"
The translation is not exact cause some parts were cut down to reduce the size due to the time limit of the presentation for "speaking class".
To start I will say that I personally don’t think that
cheap things are necessarily bad. I think, that just
as with everything else it depends. It depends on many things.
Prices often depend on a variety of things:
* Quality
* Demand (how much it’s needed)
* Scarcity
* Marketing
* Brand (recognition)
* Location
* Packaging
I’ve studied and taken as example the following type of products.
Wines, Oil, Food, Clothes, Art, Service, other…
Many times you can buy an expensive shirt that has the same quality
of a cheap shirt. But the he fact that it is expensive makes you think that
it’s better. The shirt can break just as easily in both cases, but if it is
expensive, you think it is a good quality shirt and that’s why it might
easily break and you should take care of it. And if the shirt is cheap
and it breaks, then you think that it broke cause the quality is bad and
there’s no point taking care of it. Meanwhile the quality is the same.
It is all in our minds and how we perceive things.
Many times you can buy an expensive bottle of whine that contains the same whine
as a cheap bottle, but the bottle itself is an expensive bottle and it is sold
in a designed box. All of a sudden a 5$ wine bottle can cost up to 100$
Not to mention the value of the name. Here is Shanghai for example, you can
find new designed clothes with no name made by Chinese designers for a very fair price.
Those same clothes will be imported by big international brand like H&M
and sold in other countries with their name in it for a much higher price.
Sometimes we buy high quality things we’ll use only once for an expensive
price when you can buy recyclable things for a much cheaper price.
We will often find products that normally have a very cheap price, like a bottle of
water, but if you are in a place where there are many tourists and not many shops,
you can ”rest assure” that the price of the water will be 5 times higher than the original
Restaurants located in a ”hot” area of the city or in a big city, will also
have much higher price than restaurants with the same guests and the
same delicious and fresh food, but that are located in another city or area.
Part of my research was not only about cheap prices
but about the phrase “便宜没好货,好货不便宜” itself.
What I found is that in China, this phrase is actually used
only when things break, not just for the cheap price itself
or in comparison with other similar products.
Finally i’d like to finish with a little tip:
When you buy something, make sure the quality is good enough for
the use of the product, make sure it’s environmentally safe,
research what’s out there, and most importantly make sure to buy
something that you really need and will use and that fits you and your taste.
Once you have it, make sure to use it the proper way
and combine it right.
Style is not always about price. You can buy something expensive that
will look bad if you don’t combine it right and something cheap can look
great if you combine right.
